Greek Saves - Greek Verb Tense . . . http://www.millpark.org/bible/doctrine-essential/greek_saves.html

Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (10 Volume Set): Gerhard Kittel, Gerhard Friedrich . . . [From the comments] . . . Kittle's Theological Dictionary of the New Testament accomplishes much of what I was seeking. It starts out with the meaning of the word, and its roots. How did Archaic Greeks use their form of the words and/or its forms, What documents exist to support this understanding? How did the Septuagint (225 BC) use the word? What contemporary documents use the word and how is it used? How was the word used in the New Testament? What meanings did it have in those contexts? Were there contemporary documents that use the word, and how was it used? By the time you read through the etymology of the word you are studying, you have a much greater appreciation for how historically - and culturally - loaded the Greek word was when it was used in the first century. This gives me a greater spiritual understanding of what is being communicated in the Gospels and Epistles . . . http://amzn.com/0802823246

sanctification
1 thes 5:23 verb is in the opative mood
sanctification is a state, a done deal
sanctified tense = perfect participle passive . . . it's a state brought about by the finished results of the action
there are two definitions
perfect tense - describes an action that took place in the past, the results of which continue to the present - there is no equivalent English, auxiliary verbs are used
participle - a verbal adjective

it's a final state, because it's brought about by an action that has already taken
if passive, I can't do it, or undo it

acts 26:18 ... 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

there is nothing more that can be done to put you in that state, you are preserved
we "are" sanctified - not "becoming" sanctified

other similar verbs - not a process . . . perfect participle passive . . . I do nothing, it's done unto me
saved
redeemed
justified
washed

one verse makes it sound like a process . . . [what was it] . . . why?

passive - I'm known by God . . . I didn't do anything

ro 7:25 . . . 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
